Kańczuga

The town was located by Otton of Pilcza. The town’s law was granted c.1400. Since the Middle Ages had been famous for the tinker’s profession. In the 19th century, the traditional craftsmanship consisted of baking gingerbreads and also bonnets’ making. In the second half of the 18th century a bobbin lace school took place there.

In the past the town was inhabited by townsfolk of different nationalities and confessions. The noteworthy monuments are: the St. Michael the Archangel parish church with the St. Anna chapel (1612), founded by a proprietress of the town Anna Ostrogska and the Our Lady of Grace stone Greek-Catholic church, early 17th century. In the nearby village of Siedliczka, a Jewish cemetery was preserved. It belonged to the Jewish community of Kańczuga. Several gravestones were placed there, the oldest one derives from the mid-19th century.
